Day 1: Adelaide to Wilpena Pound
7.30 am. pickup from your hotel in Adelaide, and travel 300 Kms North to Pichi Richi Pass and the historic Ghan Railway township of Quorn for lunch. Next stop is Hawker the Hub of the Flinders Ranges and the gateway to the Outback before travelling through the Moralana Scenic Drive, one of the best in the Flinders Ranges, continuing on to the Wilpena Pound Resort to check in for the night and enjoy dinner at the Ikara Restaurant.
Day 2:Wilpena Pound to Arkaroola
8.30 am. After breakfast, we continue our journey to Arkaroola as we travel through the heart of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park via Bunyeroo Valley & Gorge, spectacular Brachina Gorge, the picturesque Parachilna Gorge & on to the historic copper mining town of Blinman for lunch. With abundance of wildlife in the area there is a good chance you could see Kangaroos, Euros (Wallaroos) Emus, Parrots and the graceful Wedge Tailed Eagle. Continue across the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges across remote sheep station properties before we stop for a 4WD trek into Chambers Gorge, where you can view the gallery of ancient Aboriginal Rock Engravings. Continue on into the Gammon Ranges National Park and the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary Resort. Founded by Reg & Griselda Sprigg now operated by their son Douglas.
Day 3: Arkaroola to Innamincka
Travel via the Mt Hopeless and a combination of the old and new Strzelecki track to Innamincka. Over night at Innamincka Hotel – Motel Rooms.
Day 4: Innamincka
Visit "Coongie Lake" world heritage listed wetland area for some bird spotting & history (if access track is open), Visit some historic points of interest along the banks of the inland Coopers Creek including Kings marker and stay overnight at Innamincka
Day 5: Innamincka to Birdsville
Travel to Birdsville - visit the Burke & Wills Dig Tree and Cordillo Downs Shearing shed, where up to 80,000 sheep were shorn by shearers who rode their bicycles from Farina on the old Ghan Railway, crossing over the Cobbler and Sturts Stony deserts to get there and then back again afterwards! O/night at the Birdsville Hotel.
Today we travel into the Simpson Desert via the famous Big Red sand dune a huge sand hill on the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert. We enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the Eyre Creek, then return to Birdsville to spend the remainder of the day soaking up the atmosphere of this iconic outback town - O/night at Birdsville.
Day 7: Birdsville to Marree
A leisurely start and then head south down the famous "Birdsville Track". Taking the 'Inside track' if open - this was the original track used by Drovers with large mobs of cattle, to Mungerannie Hotel for lunch - One of the most isolated in Australia. Continue on to the old Ghan railway town of Marree - O/night at Oasis Motel, Marree - cabins
Day 8: Marree to William Creek
We travel from Marree to William Creek along the Oodnadatta track stopping at Lake Eyre South, Mound Springs and Coward Springs. Leave the Oodnadatta Track and travel out to the western access track of Lake Eyre North called Halligan Bay (if open) - arriving at William Creek at approx 5.30pm. Spend the night in the ensuited Pelican Cabins and a meal at the William Creek pub.
Day 9: William Creek to Coober Pedy
This morning fly over Lake Eyre (optional extra) on a 60 (or 120) minute Scenic Flight from William Creek at about 7.30am (at own cost). After the flight we travel to Coober Pedy - stop to visit the lake Cadibarrawirracanna for morning tea – before heading on to Coober Pedy. Spend the afternoon looking around the town. In the late afternoon we head out to enjoy a sunset visit the Breakaways - followed by dinner at the local iconic Johns Pizza Bar Restaurant - and spend the night in an underground motel in Coober Pedy.
Day 10: Coober Pedy to Adelaide
Early start travel to Adelaide via the whistle stops towns of Glendambo and Kimba - visit the rocket display at Woomera - travel to the Spencer Gulf at Port Augusta getting in to Adelaide late afternoon.
